Wesley Fofana hints at Leicester City stay despite Chelsea interest

Wesley Fofana has doused the rumours of an exit from Leicester City this summer. Chelsea are interested in the defender but saw a £70 million bid rejected by the Foxes.

The Blues started the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton. Their performance on the day underlined why they need reinforcements in the team. The only goal of the game came via a penalty dispatched by Jorginho.

Chelsea were hot on the heels of some attacking talent, including Raphinha. They thought they had a deal in place for the player, only for him to end up at Barcelona. They also missed out on Jules Kounde to Barcelona after striking a deal with Sevilla.

With a negotiating team led by new owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea are still in the market for players to bolster their squad. Several names have come up, with Frenkie de Jong among them. The latest is Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana, and as has happened all summer, it looks like a bridge too far for Chelsea.

Fofana unlikely to join Chelsea

Chelsea are desperate for signings this summer and are doing everything within its powers to bring in some quality before the transfer window shuts this month. After missing out on a few players, the Blues might have activated panic stations as the chinks in their armour were revealed in their 1-0 win over Everton this weekend.

After signing Kalidou Koulibaly, Chelsea remains interested in defensive reinforcements and have targeted Wesley Fofana. The Leicester City defender has made statements that seem to pour cold water on a move to Stamford Bridge. Fofana hinted that he would stay at the King Power Stadium this season.

According to recent reports, Chelsea backed up their interest in the defender with a £70 million bid. The bid represents an increase of £7m following the first bid of £63m.

Following the rejection of the £70 million bid, the Blues remain undeterred to sign the player, and Leicester expects a third bid for Fofana.

Fofana not keen on Chelsea move

Many thought the £70m bid by Chelsea was enough to convince Leicester City to part with their asset, but the Foxes remained resolute in their resolve to keep the young defender.

Fofana had got tongues wagging when he deleted traces of Leicester City from all his social media profiles. It led to rumours of an impending exit from the club. However, the player made nonsense of the reports when in a recent interview, he suggested that he may remain at Leicester City for the current season.

Leicester City signed Fofana from Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne in 2020. It cost the Foxes £36.5m to acquire the services of the Frenchman. Since his arrival, he has made 50 appearances in all competitions for Leicester City. He helped the club win the 2020-21 FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Chelsea in the final. He signed a long-term contract with Leicester in March that will run till 2027.
