Finch finished the series with 21 runs in three innings, extending a pattern. Finch has produced 164 runs in 11 ODI innings in 2022, 62 against Sri Lanka, with six single-digit scores.
This is a large enough sample size to be a serious discussion point and an impending concern for Australia.
When Finch becomes heavy, it affects the rest of his game. “It’s going nicely. The rewards are coming, but not yet.

Finch faces New Zealand in Cairns in a vital week following the T20 World Cup. Teammates, the national selector, and the head coach all back him, but another tough series will keep the problem boiling.

Finch lifting the T20 World Cup on home soil on November 13 would be the ultimate way to sign out, but sport gives no guarantees of a happy conclusion.
Eoin Morgan’s career ended following successive ducks against the Netherlands earlier this year. Morgan’s leadership was respected, and it’s doubtful he would have been pushed, but he knew his time was up a few days before England’s last game.
Finch’s Future is Uncertain
Australia’s top-order replacements have made excellent arguments recently, which may be a factor.
Travis Head, on paternity leave for the Zimbabwe and New Zealand series, has averaged 62 in ODIs this year. Ben McDermott hit 55 and 104 against Pakistan, while Marnus Labuschagne fits better in the top three.
Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh might replace Finch as captain. Steven Smith might be considered if World Cup experience is needed.
